Brian Fay
The Most Recent Forever
A Highlanes Gallery national touring survey exhibition of the work of Brian Fay.
The Most Recent Forever is a multi-venue national touring survey show of Brian Fay’s drawing practice beginning at The Highlanes Municipal Gallery, Drogheda, traveling to Limerick City Gallery of Art, Limerick and Uillinn: West Cork Arts Centre, Cork.
Having recently undergone a shift in our own understanding of time and duration due to the pandemic, how we feel and experience time in different ways has resonated with so many of us. Fay’s practice uses different representational strategies of drawing to record, depict and present models of time and temporality using pre-existing artefacts, objects and artworks to stand in for our own experience of time.
This tour will present an overview of Fay’s drawing practice from the last two decades. While there will be core groups of drawings throughout the tour, new drawings will be made derived directly from the collections or contexts associated with each venue. The exhibition itself will evolve and adapt becoming something different in time at each stage of the tour. Fay will also curate the collections at Highlanes Gallery and Limerick City Gallery of Art that resonate with his work. Towards the latter part of the tour a catalogue will be produced with texts from Poet Vona Groarke, Art Historian Tim Stott and designed by Oonagh Young.
Brian Fay is an artist and Senior Lecturer in Fine Art at TU Dublin. Using drawing he examines the materiality of pre-existing artworks and objects to consider our complex relationships to time. He exhibits nationally and internationally and recently undertook a residency at The Josef and Anni Albers Foundation Residency Programme, USA in 2022. His work is in the National Gallery of Ireland, Arts Council Collection, National Drawing Collection, Crawford Art Gallery, DLR Art Collection and the Office of Public Works. In 2014 he won the Derwent International Drawing Prize and in the 2016 the AXA Drawing Prize.
An exhibition guide with text written by art critic and writer Aidan Dunne accompanies the exhibition. Towards the latter part of the tour a catalogue will be produced with texts from Poet Vona Groarke, Art Historian Tim Stott and designed by Oonagh Young.
Traveling to Uillinn West Cork Arts Centre, Skibbereen for Saturday 18 February, 2023.
