Mayor Long & Helen Carey at Re-Launch of Limerick City Gallery of Art

Prior to working as an independent Curator based in Dublin, Helen Carey was the inaugural Director of the Centre Culturel Irlandais, Paris; Director of Galway Arts Centre, Ireland and Public Art Project Manager for the landmark Millennium Commission at Bristol, United Kingdom. She has worked with artists who are well known nationally and internationally, including Michael Warren, Amanda Coogan, Sean Scully, Banksy - the renowned graffiti artist, and young British artists Tim Noble and Sue Webster, among others. She has also worked with many emerging artists, and has been involved in managing visual art residencies.

Her current projects include Labour History projects - to mark the 1913 Dublin Lockout centenary, including a specially commissioned lens based art work on the sites of the international financial crisis - the international stock exchanges - with Berlin based Irish artist mark Curran, which received a Projects Award from the Arts Council of Ireland in 2010.

Her background includes studies in history and politics from University College Dublin, as well as post graduate studies in Contemporary Visual Art Practices at Institute of Art and Design & Technology, Dun Laoghaire. Carey is very excited to come to Limerick with its uniquely vibrant visual arts culture in this elegant city with lots of character, to work in such a beautifully restored and enhanced building, with its fine collection and immense contemporary art potential.
