Florilegium A Gathering of Flowers by Naomi Draper
Draper has developed a large-scale pressed flower installation. The six metre-long VEIL 2017 creates a lush botanical carpet. The proportions of this “ornate textile piece” might suggest connections with Ireland’s lace-making heritage.
A desire to preserve fleeting moments in nature is evident in other works presented in this exhibition including Foliatus (2017) which draws on an historical form of botanical archiving known as ‘nature printing’ and Interval (2017) – a series of 11 lithographic prints. Like flower-pressing, printmaking encases an impression in negative space, through a process akin to fossilisation.
The exhibition is curated by Linda Shevlin, Curator-in-Residence at Roscommon Arts Centre and is accompanied by a text, Preserving Fragments, by arts writer Joanne Laws.
Naomi Draper graduated from NCAD in 2007. This exhibition originated in Roscommon Arts Centre and ARTBOX, Dublin. Naomi has spent the last few weeks, with her family, collecting cow parsley in County Leitrim to make VEIL 2018 for her exhibition in Limerick City Gallery of Art.
Exhibition runs to 2nd September 2018
