Who put Bella in the wych elm: an exhibition by Isabella Walsh
Limerick City Gallery of Art (LCGA) is very pleased to present, Who put Bella in the wych elm, by Limerick based artist Isabella Walsh.
Who put Bella in the wych elm is an exhibition based on a true story, a murder mystery involving an unidentified female skeleton found inside a hollow tree in Hagely Wood, Worcestershire, 1943. The exhibition takes the form of a book created by the artist to act as a metaphor for the story. The project is accompanied by an audio piece, composed by Cork based musician/composer/interdisciplinary artist Aileen Wallace.
Director/Curator of LCGA, Úna McCarthy said of the work by Walsh;
“I first saw this piece of work as part of the Contact Studios exhibition in 2015 and was intrigued by the story. I subsequently invited the artist to present the piece as the first instalment of the work and it is envisaged that over the next two years we will collaborate on working with Isabella on further developments of this series”.
Born in 1983, Isabella Walsh is a multidisciplinary artist with a background in archaeology based in Contact Studios, Limerick. She holds a 1:1 BA (Hons) in Printmaking and Contemporary Practice from Limerick School of Art and Design. Her work has been exhibited in group shows nationally and internationally. She has participated in residencies locally, collaborating on ‘Limerick’s ghost stories’ at the Park Kiosk, and internationally with The Arba Minch Project in Southern Ethiopia and with Occupy Space – Seattle, USA
