For one week only, Limerick City Gallery of Art presents a selection of posters from the Collection of Michael O’Connor.
The Michael O’Connor Poster Collection was donated to LCGA in the late 1980s. All together comprising 2800 items, the collection is characterised by a considerable variety of styles and content. Michael O’Connor had an evident interest in collecting posters with a particular cultural theme or message. In its entirety, this collection is eclectic and remarkable, proclaiming the scope and potential of the poster as a visual medium.
In the collection, numerous design styles are represented from several European countries such as France, Belgium, Germany, Poland, Spain, Slovakia amongst others, as well as a significant representation of American posters from the 1970s and 80s.
This particular selection focuses on German Poster design. It highlights the work of two prominent German designers Matthies Holger (1940) and Hans Hillman (1925). It also includes a number of posters advertising a range of German Cultural institutions including Theatre, Opera Houses and Exhibition venues.
We have also presented a number of smaller pieces from a range of countries which point to the breadth of subject matter and style that make up this collection. LCGA is indebted to the donor for the generosity of this gift.
Michael O’ Connor was born in Listowel, County Kerry, where he lived throughout his life. He died in September 2010.
