Garvan was born in Donegal in 1974 and is currently an artist and photographer based in Dublin . He completed his BA in photography at Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design & Technology in 2008. He recently held his first solo exhibition, Domestic Bodies, at the Screen Directors Guild, Dublin.

Garvan has exhibited in annual juried exhibitions in the US and Ireland, including the RHA annual exhibitions (2007, 2008) and in ev+a, Reading the City (2009).

Garvan’s main interest with photography is centered on the body, in particular on the social body and how society shapes us as human beings. His latest body of work ‘Wearing Purple’ draws our attention to aging using a self-image process, where his subjects, all senior-citizens, gaze into the camera under a strong artificial light holding a cable release, each in control of their own portrait. Previous work also engages with social preoccupation around bodily perfection and our constant obsession with youth and glamour and on ‘fitting in’ to a society.
